"Matusalén" by Mariana Osorio. The cycle of a typical monarch butterfly lasts 4 to 5 weeks. However, when summer is over and temperatures drop drastically, a special generation is born. This new group, also known as the Methuselah generation, is gifted with an incredibly long lifespan (8 months) in order to undertake the titanic journey of immigration from Canada to Mexico. This photo-metallic sculpture uses this powerful symbol to represent immigrants from all over the world who risk their lives in search of a better future. All of the metal butterflies were hand-cut, and feature original film photos of immigrants from Mexico, Russia, China, Brazil, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Lebanon, Peru and Ecuador, living in New York.
